TYRP1 gene

Definition

A gene that makes a protein involved in making melanin (a pigment that gives color to skin, hair, and eyes). Mutations (changes) in the TYRP1 gene have been found in an inherited condition called oculocutaneous albinism. People with this condition have very pale skin and light-colored hair and eyes. They also have a high risk of developing skin cancer at an early age.
